Collections/Arrangements

We are very excited to offer A Collection of Guitar Music for Carillon arranged by Mary Jo Disler. Mary Jo, a guitarist, in collaboration with Dennis Curry, a carillonneur, arranged 22 pieces of guitar music, spanning 300 years, and totaling 55 pages of music. The collection is bound with a spiral binding for easy page turning. Mary Jo has provided her own commentary on several of the pieces, presented from the guitarist’s perspective.

Shall We Dance?
Spice up your playing with the drama of a Spanish bullfight. Carlo van Ulft included two Spanish dances, Padilla’s El Relicario and Marquina’s España Cañi in his collection Two Paso Dobles. Equally exciting, three lively dance tunes, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances V, VI and VII, also arranged by Carlo van Ulft are included in Three Hungarian Dances. Hungarian Dance V will be recognized by most audiences but any of the three may coax even the most reserved listener to break out in dance. Add some cuteness to your concert programs with Dance of the Little Swans by Tchaikovsky and arranged by Austin Ferguson. In this famous dance from Swan Lake, let your mind picture the dancing of the cygnets (young swans), huddling and moving together as a group.

Folk Tunes
No carillon library should be without something fun. Linda Dzuris’s collection of Yiddish Music for Carillon II (The Grinding Mill, Welcoming Choir, A Friend for Life, and Desire) is not only quite fun, but also a bit quirky. The storylines and music in this collection addressed many topics of concern for the new immigrants from Romania.

For the Student
A cooperative project between ACME and the North American Carillon School, Carillon Music for Beginners II Progressive Studies is designed to follow the study of Carillon Music for Beginners. This new book consists of 20 works, ordered by level of difficulty. Each piece of music nudges the student a bit out of their comfort zone by: increasing the manual and pedal range utilized (requiring students to play notes in an extended range, not just those immediately in front of them), increasing the use of pedal playing, introducing faster tempos, and introducing the technique of pedals and left hand sharing a "voice".

Sacred Music
Lee Cobb’s lyrical arrangements of three favorite hymns, I Love to Tell the Stories, Blessed Assurance, and To God Be the Glory, are presented in A Hymn Suite for Carillon. This collection was commissioned by Brent Shaw for the 85th year of the Singing Tower of First-Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. John Knox’s Chorale Prelude on “Engelberg” was written for 2-octave instruments, and illustrates the Fred Pratt Green hymn text, “When in our music God is glorified”. A new composition by France Newell, Passion, is a duet based on the last Seven Words of Christ. It won the 1st prize in the carillon composition competition conducted by the Perpignan Sacred Music Festival 2016.

An additional arrangement sure to be known by the organists in your audiences, is Fountain Reverie by Percy Fletcher, arranged by Scott Hummel. Originally composed for organ, this carillon arrangement provides a rippling accompaniment in the hands against a very lyrical melody in the pedals.

Original Compositions

We are pleased to offer a composition by a new composer for carillon, Laura Brackney. In her piece, Austin’s Wind Chimes, Laura has realistically recreated the sound of wind chimes on a windy day. She was inspired by listening to the carillon at the University of Texas at Austin. Mountain Flight for Peace by Frances Newell is a tone painting reliving the flights of the First Aerial Unit formed by Yale University students during World War I. Frances Newell’s grandfather was one of the pilots. Cleveland Prelude was written by John Franek, a new composer for carillon. Written in the style of toccata, it would be an exciting opener for a concert and certainly command attention from the audience. A new composition by Pete Olejar, Aria, is a beautiful, but melancholy song for carillon that explores major and minor modes.

Lastly, the 2016 collection of ACME music includes revisions to Morning Dance by Neil Thornock and Music for Twilight by Frank Della Penna. Neil feels that this new version of the piece is very much superior to his previous version. The revisions for Music for Twilight, originally published in 1999, are a combination of notation corrections and revisions by the composer. If you are familiar with the score, you will notice that “Dance of the Fireflies” has a new sound.
