When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

In the decade of the 1910's, the writers in Tin Pan Alley and elsewhere generated a tremendous number of songs. There were ragtime songs (Waiting for the Robert E. Lee), ballads (Moonlight Bay), Irish or Irish-American songs (Danny Boy), sentimental songs (Smiles), and love songs (For Me and My Gal). There were nostalgic songs (Indiana) and convivial songs (Macnamara's Band). There were also Broadway show tunes (I Love a Piano).

There were more songs written during World War I than for any other war. Some songs were written to inspire the troops in the war effort (Keep the Home-Fires Burning). The song "K-K-K-Katy speaks of going off to war. It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary became a marching song for the British troops during World War I. Though not technically a "song", the Colonel Bogey March was well known in the 1910's and gained further prominence when Malcolm Arnold included part of it along with a counter march in his film score for "The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957.
