The Alfred Suite

When Alfred University's carillon arrived from Belgium in July 1937, Dr. Ray Wingate, professor of organ, was given charge of the carillon. At the time of the appointment, Wingate not only did not play the carillon, but he, in fact, had never even heard a carillon. That summer, Wingate visited the Riverside church in New York City to watch Kamiel Lefévere play the carillon. Wingate and Lefévere subsequently began a correspondence and became good friends. Lefévere, carillonneur of the Riverside Church, was asked to play the Dedication Recital of Alfred's Davis Memorial Carillon on June 12, 1938. Lefévere later received an honorary doctorate from Alfred University.
